The Altersvorsorgedepot in short
What is the Altersvorsorgedepot?
A new state-subsidised pension account in Germany, open from 1 January 2027. You save into funds such as ETFs, and the state adds a yearly subsidy, the Zulage. New Riester contracts can no longer be sold after 31 December 2026.
How much does the state add?
The Grundzulage is 50% of your first €360 a year and 25% of the rest up to €1,800: at most €540 a year, if you pay in at least €120. Each child with Kindergeld adds up to €300 a year, matched from the same contributions. Savers under 25 get €200 once.
How much can I pay in?
Up to €6,840 a year per contract (€570 a month), in at most 2 contracts. The Zulage is paid on the first €1,800 a year per person; money above that still grows with no tax until the payout.
Standarddepot or your own funds?
The Standarddepot holds two funds the provider picks, a safer one and a riskier one. Its yearly costs are capped at 1%, and unless you agree otherwise at most 50% stays in the riskier fund from 5 years before the payout, 30% from 2 years. In a depot you run yourself you pick ETFs and other funds up to risk class 5, or euro government bonds, with no cost cap and no move to safer funds.
How is the Altersvorsorgedepot taxed?
Nothing is taxed while you save: no Abgeltungsteuer, no Vorabpauschale, and switching funds is tax-free. Contributions up to €1,800 plus the Zulagen count as Sonderausgaben. At the payout, the subsidised part (those contributions, the Zulagen and all they earned) is taxed as income at your personal rate. Of the money above €1,800 a year only the gain is taxed, half of it when paid after 62 and at least 12 years of contract.
When is the money paid out?
From an age between 65 and 70. Up to 30% can come as a lump sum at the start; the rest is a payout plan that runs to at least age 85, or a lifelong annuity. Taking money out early means paying back the Zulagen and the tax relief.
Can I move my Riester contract into it?
Yes. With 3 months’ notice to the end of a quarter, the Riester money moves across without paying back Zulagen or tax. It sits outside the €6,840 a year, stays subsidised money and is taxed in full at the payout. Each provider may charge at most €150 for the move, and the Riester guarantee does not come with it. The calculator can include a transfer.
How does this calculator work?
It applies the 2027 rules to your savings plan from 1 January 2027 to the payout, over 1,000 possible futures built from the funds’ real past prices, and puts the same money in a normal depot that is taxed along the way next to it. It shows a range, not a forecast, and it is not tax or financial advice.
Rules as in the Altersvorsorgereformgesetz (BGBl. 2026 I Nr. 156). A summary, not tax or financial advice.
Foreign listings are converted at each day’s exchange rate. The broker fee comes out of every purchase. The account fee is charged on what the portfolio is worth (100 bp = 1% a year), a little every day, plus VAT on it. The all-world fund pays both too.
An illustration from past prices, not financial advice: past returns do not promise future ones.
Running your what-if
Real closing prices, every purchase on its own date, replayed one trading day at a time.

Total return: prices are adjusted closes, so every dividend counts as reinvested on the day it was paid. Before tax; after the broker and account fees set above.
Under water
How far below its previous high the portfolio sat at each point — the falls you would have lived through.
Total return, measured on the holdings themselves, so your own purchases neither hide nor deepen a fall. Two plans in the same funds fall by the same percentage; how much money that is depends on how much was in at the time.

No rebalancing: each row keeps what it bought. A date before a fund’s first price is moved or skipped, and the row says so. The X-ray uses plan A.
